Working with the idea of transcendence as a general guiding concept, it is not without reason that 'The Hermit' seemed like the obvious choice for the selection of the album's first single. Taking on an almost god-like perspective, it provides an interesting take on hip-hop's classic brag and boast tradition; whilst some of its more classic elements are definitely present – with the narrator taking on a wide disparity of inhuman abilities – the focus doesn't necessarily lie with the rapper himself. Instead, it is the complexity of the material world, and the powerful human urge to transcend it, which plays a central role throughout. Words, then, enable the artist to do the seemingly impossible; 'I contemplate, observe the curves of history / I transcend, I forever claim victory / I challenge physics, unify mystics / decode hieroglyphics and the metaphysics'. At the same time, the track also lays the foundations for some of the recurring concepts present throughout the rest of the album, identifying art as the catalyst between reality and imagination; arguably the two most important perspectives that we are faced with on a daily basis.
